Cracked screen: keep using it or fix it now?
A cracked screen isn't just cosmetic. Here's what the damage can lead to, and how to decide whether to repair it now or risk waiting.
Lots of people carry on with a cracked screen for months. Sometimes that’s fine — but a crack is rarely just cosmetic, and waiting can turn a cheap fix into an expensive one.
What a crack can lead to
- It spreads. A small corner crack travels across the glass with every drop and pocket squeeze.
- Touch starts failing. Once cracks reach the digitizer layer, you get dead spots, ghost touches, or an unresponsive area.
- Moisture and dust get in. Broken glass stops being a seal. Damp and grit reach the display and the board underneath — that’s how a screen job becomes a board job.
- Cut fingers. Spidered glass shreds fingertips and screen protectors.
When you can wait a little
If the glass is lightly cracked, touch works perfectly, the display is clear with no lines or black patches, and there are no sharp edges — you’re not in danger of losing data today. Pop a screen protector over it to hold the glass together and book the repair when it suits you.
When to fix it now
Don’t wait if you see any of these:
- Lines, coloured bands or black patches on the display — the screen itself is failing, not just the glass.
- Touch not responding anywhere on the screen.
- The crack is over the camera or earpiece, or glass is lifting.
- The phone got the crack in water or has been wet since.
The repair
Most screen replacements are done within the hour with quality parts, and they carry a three-month warranty. Fixing the glass early usually means we only replace the screen — not the board behind it.
