Back up your iPhone before a repair (5 minutes)

Your data stays safe during a repair, but a quick backup is smart insurance. Here's how to back up an iPhone in a few minutes before you bring it in.

For most repairs your data is never at risk. We don’t need your passcode for a screen replacement, and we never go through your photos, apps or messages — your information stays exactly where it is. Even so, a quick backup before any repair is just good sense, the same way you’d save a document before closing your laptop. It takes about five minutes.

The easiest way: iCloud

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
  3. Tap iCloud, then iCloud Backup.
  4. Tap Back Up Now and wait for it to finish.

That’s it. If anything ever happened, you could restore everything onto the same phone or a new one.

No iCloud space? Use a computer

You can also back up to a Mac (Finder) or a Windows PC (Apple Devices app or iTunes): plug the phone in, select it, and choose Back up now. A computer backup is free and doesn’t depend on iCloud storage.

Quick checklist before you bring it in

  • Back up (iCloud or computer) — done above.
  • Know your passcode. We rarely need it, but for some repairs and tests it helps.
  • Turn off Find My only if we ask you to — for most repairs you won’t need to.
  • Remove any case and SIM tray if it’s easy to.

Why we still recommend it

Backing up isn’t about us needing access — it’s about you never having to worry. Phones can have hidden faults, especially after a drop or water damage, and a backup means your photos and contacts are safe no matter what. Read more about how we protect your data in our warranty and data promise.
