Why is my phone battery draining so fast?
Battery dropping quicker than it used to? Here's what's normal, what you can fix yourself, and the signs it's time for a new battery.
Phone batteries wear out — it’s normal. Most last about two to three years of daily charging before they noticeably weaken. If yours used to last all day and now needs a top-up by lunchtime, the battery is usually the cause, not the phone.
Try these first
A few settings make a real difference before you spend anything:
- Turn down screen brightness or switch on auto-brightness. The screen is the single biggest drain.
- Check which apps are using the most power (Settings → Battery on both iPhone and Android). Social and map apps running in the background are common culprits.
- Turn off Background App Refresh for apps you don’t need updating constantly.
- Update your software. Updates often fix battery bugs.
If the phone improves, great — it was settings, not hardware.
Signs the battery itself is worn
It’s the battery (not settings) when you see:
- The phone dies suddenly, or jumps from 30% straight to off.
- It gets hot while charging or during normal use.
- The back feels swollen, or the screen is being pushed up — stop using it and bring it in, a swollen battery is a safety risk.
- On iPhone, Settings → Battery → Battery Health shows maximum capacity under about 80%.
